GECO Kids Read

Send us your kids favorite summer books.  Tell us the name and the author of the book, a guess at the reading level, any maturity level concerns, who you are and why your kids liked it.

Here are some recommendations from other GECO kids on good books to read this summer:

Another Fine Myth  by Robert Asprin - A great series according to Chris, fantasy with a sense of humor.  Middle school level read.

Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett - this is an intermediate read set it Hyde Park in Chicago.  Anika loved it!  She especially like solving the picture pentamino code.  She is currently reading The Wright Three by the same author.

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia Wrede - this is a series of books that Anika is simply addicted to!  She reads them again and again!

Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins  - A boy on summer vacation, who cannot attend his beloved summer camp, because he needs to mind his baby brother, saves his father in the underworld.  Such a fun, engrossing read!

The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordian - Kevin loved this book, and now Tasha and Lydia have devoured it as well.  Imagine the Greek Gods are still up to their antics today, you know coming down to earth and dabbling in things.  An exciting story better for middle school aged children.  The next book, The Sea of Monsters, is now available!

Measle and the Wrathmonk by Ian Ogilvy - We heard from several kids in the Lane School MRC that the series beginning with this book was great for the 3rd through 6th grade crowd.  The series is about an orphan with an evil guardian and a magical train set, kids working together to overcome evil etc., etc., etc.  They are what Lauren is reading!

The Teachers Funeral by Richard Peck - Apparently not nearly as sad as you might think from the title, this is a great book set in 1904.  One of Kevin's picks for the year.  (After The Lightening Thief, though, I believe!)

Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce - First in a four book series - The Immortals Quartet.  The others are Wolf Speaker, The Emperor Mage and  The Realms of the Gods.  Chris has been enjoying these this summer!

The Wall and the Wing  by Laura Ruby - Kevin loved it and wrote, “In The Wall and the Wing, Gurl, who can turn invisible, is being hunted by a gangster to help him commit a string of robberies.  . . . I heard about this book on the library recommended list and quickly checked it out.  The library actually underpromoted this book, because the book was way better than it actually sounded, and it sounded pretty good.”  I read it, too, and liked the story.  I think it is appropriate for 5th or 6th and up.

Whales on Stilts by M. T. Anderson - Science Fiction that does not take itself too seriously.  We read this one aloud last summer in a single (albeit long) sitting!  Very funny.
