“Please Don't Leave Our Children Behind Day” Organizers:

Thank you for offering to organize a group or bring your family to Springfield on April 18th for Please Don’t Leave Our Children Behind Day!  This is my second update email.  Please see http://geco.hinsdaleinfo.net/update_1.htm for last week’s update.

Today I will focus on other activities in Springfield.

For groups who will be in Springfield before 11:30 or who are staying after 1:30 will have some time available for additional activities.  What activities is your group planning?

I have spoken to one group that is planning on having all the children write letters and draw pictures to present to their legislators.  They are planning on meeting the legislators in their offices to turn over their papers.

My group is planning on visiting the Old Capitol and the Lincoln Herndon Law Offices in the morning and the Lincoln Library and Museum in the afternoon, last year we toured the Lincoln home and Durbin’s offices, which are located across the street.

Some people have said that they plan to spend more time in the Capitol building, so they can spend more time observing from the balconies and touring the building.

For those of you still mulling over where to spend your “free” time, see the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau:  http://www.visit-springfieldillinois.com/Visitor/Historic.asp

And now something for the kids:

How about a little background about how the legislative branch of our government works.  The US House has in informative website for children.  http://clerkkids.house.gov/parent_teach/edu.html.

Do you know of a web site that might be of interest to the children coming to Springfield?  Please send a pointer to me!  Thanks.

Now, some information from all of you:

1)  I am still waiting for information from many of you regarding your legislators.  If you have not already done so, could you please email me with your legislators’ names and tell me if you have contacted them yet?

2)  When is your group planning on arriving and departing Springfield and what are you doing in addition to the group activities organized between 11:30 – 1:30?

I will send out another briefing next week.  Four weeks to go!
