“Please Don't Leave Our Children Behind Day” Organizers:

Well, we are getting close to April 18th!  I hope that your individual groups have great days planned and that people are anxious and excited to come to Springfield!  This is my fourth update email.  Please see http://geco.hinsdaleinfo.net/springfield for previous updates.

Speakers

We continue to forecast a large turnout for Please Don’t Leave Our Children Behind Day!  In addition to the Hall of Flags in the Howlett Building, we have also reserved the auditorium.  Absolutely NO FOOD is permitted in the auditorium!  It is in the auditorium that our speakers will present.  We are currently planning for one speaker from 11:30 – 12:00 and the second from 12:15 – 12:45.  The auditorium is large enough to handle our entire group, but the Hall of Flags is not.  This means that the consumption of lunch will need to take place in shifts, unless the weather is fine and many people can eat outside.  When you arrive at the Howlett Building, you will be given either an early or a late time slot.

We have invited several elected official to come speak to us.  So far Tom Cross has confirmed that he will speak.  We are still awaiting final confirmation from several others.  Tom Cross is serving his seventh term in the Illinois General Assembly as the District 84 State Representative for District 84, which encompasses parts of Oswego, Plainfield, Aurora and Naperville.  He has been the Republican Leader for the Illinois House since 2003.   Rep. Cross lives in Oswego with his wife Genie and their two children, Reynolds and Hudson.   A big thank you goes to Jill Ko for convincing Rep. Cross to speak to us.  He will address how an idea becomes a law and he will explain what we will see when we look down from the balconies in the house chamber.

Something to share with our legislators:

This coming week we will be focusing on determining what to include in a packet of information to be provided to each legislator with whom we collectively meet.  If you have any suggestions, please email them to me.

And now something for the kids:

For a bit of an understanding about the legislative process, see Project VoteSmart’s Government 101 site:  http://www.vote-smart.org/resource_govt101_02.php

Important Information for the Springfield Tourist:

1)       Julie Crooks pointed out that the Lincoln Home is a run by the National Park Service, which has developed a good Junior Ranger program for children.  The Junior Ranger program is available in Springfield.  See the Nation Parks web site for more details:  http://www.nps.gov/liho/forkids/index.htm.

2)       The Lincoln Library and Museum does sell tickets over the internet, up until 3 days in advance.  If you know you are going to visit, you might want to save yourself a little time by buying in advance:  http://tickets.alplm.com/

Now, some information from all of you:

Please be aware that I will need a fairly firm estimate of the number of people (children and adults) in your group by April 13th.  I will also need additional information to ensure the day goes smoothly. If you are already in a position to provide this information, please do so now.  I will remind you again next week.  Thank you!
